OKLAHOMA CITY - Freshman Jocelyn Forest scattered five hits and struck out five as the California softball team upset Fresno State, 1-0, to advance to the semifinals of the College World Series Saturday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The seventh-seeded Bears (51-21) now play No. 3 seed Washington Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT (12:30 p.m.). Cal, which lost to Arizona in the first round Thursday, must beat the Huskies twice to advance to Monday's championship game. The other semifinal features UCLA against DePaul.
Earlier in the day, the Bears shutout Arizona State, 2-0, to stay alive in the eight-team, double-elimination CWS.
Against Fresno State, which entered the CWS seeded fourth in the field and ranked second in the country, the Bears had only three hits, but two came in the second inning. Senior catcher Megumi Takasaki led off with a double into the left field corner. After moving to third base on a wild pitch, Takasaki scored on first baseman Kirsten Drake's sharp single to center.
Forest made the run stand up by repeatedly getting out of trouble. The Bulldogs left 10 runners on base and posted their biggest threat in the seventh inning. Becky Witt was hit by a pitch and Vanessa Czarnecki singled to put runners on first and second with one out. However, Forest got Amanda Scott to ground out and struck out clean-up hitter Angla Cevantez looking on a 3-2 pitch.
