Fresno, Calif. - Week 1 in Review: UC Santa Barbara & Cal Poly No. 1 Fresno State wasted little time in posting big numbers in its season openers last weekend at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly ... The Bulldogs opened the 1999 season with 15 multiple hits which included eight home runs with two or more dingers hit in three of the four games ... Seven different 'Dogs hit the long ball last weekend ... Fresno State outscored its opponents 36-7 and had a .631 slugging percentage in four games ... The Bulldog pitching staff posted two shutouts and notched a collective 0.75 ERA in 28.0 innings with 26 strikeouts while holding the opponent's bats to a .212 batting average ... Nine Bulldogs are hitting better than .300 as the team is batting .377 in the first four games ... Four 'Dogs are batting better than .400 and three better than .500 ... Fresno State's 4-0 start equals its best jump on a season for the ninth time since 1978 (1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1995 and 1997).
New 'Dogs Make Solid Impact Freshman left-handed pitcher Kristen Hunter (Portland, Ore.) leads the team with a .714 batting average (5-7, 3 runs, double, home run, 3 RBI, 9 total bases) and the pitching staff with a 0.58 ERA with two victories, one shutout and 15 strikeouts in 12.0 innings ... Freshman second baseman Lovieanne Jung (Westminster) made her collegiate debut with a two-run home run in her first at bat against the Gauchos ... Freshman Lindsay Fossatti (Tustin) hit her first career home run -- a three-run shot-- in the night cap against the Gauchos as a pinch hitter.
Old 'Dogs Up to the Same Tricks Senior All-American Lindsay Parker (Glendale) owns a 0.98 ERA in 14.1 innings of work with nine strikeouts and one shutout ... Parker went the distance in the 3-0 nine inning win over Cal Poly to pick up her second win and first shutout on the season ... In fact, Parker is 10-1 (9-1 in starts and one win in relief) with a save in her last 13 appearances for a 1.23 ERA (68.2 innings, 48 hits, 21 runs, 12 earned runs, 51 strikeouts, 27 walks) ... Opening the 1999 season with a four-game hitting streak and batting .563, sophomore All-American Becky Witt (Reseda) is riding a seven-game hitting streak that dates back to May 24, 1998 ... Witt is batting .500 (13-26) with six runs, 11 RBI, 20 total bases and a .769 slugging percentage ... Witt, who broke the WAC's single-season run record (40) in league games only, opened her rookie season with a seven-game hit streak (.375 BA, 9-24, 9 runs, double, RBI) ... Junior All-American pitcher/outfielder Amanda Scott (Clovis) pitched 1.2 innings in relief in the first game against UCSB ... Scott extends her streak to 35.0 innings without an earned run in her last seven appearances (five starts) since May 21, 1998 ... Junior first baseman Angela Cervantez (Madera) is swinging a hot bat with a .533 average (8-15) and a four-game hit streak... A '98 All-College World Series selection, Cervantez is second to Witt on the team in hits, RBI (7) and total bases (14) but leads the team in doubles (3) ... She hit her fourth career home run in game one against UCSB.
