Fresno, Calif. - The 1998-99 Women's basketball team held its annual awards banquet today at the Piccadilly Inn-University. Head coach Britt King and members of the Tip-Off Club booster group honored the team for its efforts during the past season.
Freshman Janie McCombs was named the team's Most Improved Player. After a slow start, McCombs came back to lead the team in scoring in the game at San Diego State, including a perfect performance from the free throw line. Academic Awards went to junior Laura Paukert, and seniors Jessie Farias and Connie Krueger. Sophomore Danielle Graham was named the team's Hustle Award winner. Graham was third on the team in steals with 44 and played in all 28 games this season. Sophomore Angel Hines received the Newcomer Award after leading the team in blocks with 20 and finishing second on the team in rebounds with 190.
The Bulldog Award was presented to Farias for her work on the court, in the classroom and in the community. This year Farias led the team in assists (165), steals (74), free throw percentage (64-74; .865) and 3-point percentage (43-105; .410). Krueger received the Herb Young Memorial Award presented by Young's wife, Myrna. Only the second time the award has been presented, it is given to a Bulldog who has had to overcome adversity in order to play. Junior Tiffany Lewis was also recognized for being named to the All-WAC second team, and for leading the team in rebounding (9.4 per game) and scoring (12.6) throughout the season.
