FRESNO, Calif. -Â The Fresno State women's basketball team and head coach Ryan McCarthy announced the addition of two players from the transfer portal in Jada Hunter and Rubi Gray.Â
Hunter comes to Fresno State after playing two seasons at Saint Mary's College. The 5-foot-10 guard posted 18 starts in 32 games while shooting 38% from the field (73-of-188) and 65% from the charity stripe (32-of-49). The incoming senior has quick hands, Hunter sat fourth in the West Coast Conference standings in steals with 64 (2.0 spg) and totaled 72 assists on the season. In her two years as a Gael, Hunter totaled 26 starts in 63 games, 293 points, 138 rebounds while shooting 40% from the field and 66% from the free throw line.Â
"We are very excited about Jada wanting to end her career in the Valley, she will make an immediate impact in our program and has established herself as one of the best defenders in the country," says head coach Ryan McCarthy. "She is a great athlete and does a great job of getting downhill as a playmaker. Her best basketball is ahead of her and she will fit perfectly within our system."
The Vallejo, Calif. native started her time at Laney College where she was named the California State Player of the Year (North), First Team All-League recipient, before transferring to Saint Mary's.Â
Gray will trek down from NorCal to the Central Valley after two seasons at Sacramento State. The 5-foot-10 guard was ninth in scoring in the Big Sky conference averaging 14.2 points on a 467 point season. The incoming junior is a strong shooter from all areas, shooting 40% from the field (170-of-422) and 33% from three (76-of-224). The Devonport, Tasmania native's accuracy from beyond the arc shows well, as Gray was second in the Big Sky in 3PFM per game (2.3) and totaled 76 made threes this season.Â
"Rubi was one of the best players in the Big Sky and can score at all three levels. She can really shoot the ball from three and has a very quick release," says head coach Ryan McCarthy. "She loves being in the gym and putting in extra work, which is exactly the kind of student athlete that fits with our culture. The Valley is getting one of the best shooters out west."
Gray's two seasons as a Hornet showcased 47 starts on 63 games while totaling 558 points, 131 rebounds and shooting 39% from the field, 33% from beyond the arc and 84% from the free throw line as well as being named Big Sky Academic All-Conference member.Â
