Fresno, Calif. - They did what they set out to do. The Rice Owls dominated the 1999 Western Athletic Conference regular season and they continued their dominance to Fresno as they won the WAC Tournament by defeating TCU 18-3.
This is the Owls third straight WAC Tournament Championship and they receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Rice will find out who its next opponent is on Monday during the selection show at 3 p.m. EST.
Whether they new it or not, the Owls scored all the runs they would need in the first inning as they posted four runs off TCU starter Chris Frazier. Rice tacked on two more run in the fourth, but Frogs came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The Owls put the game out of reach in the seventh as they pushed across eight runs. Centerfielder Jason Gray had a bases loaded triple to bring in three runs and tournament MVP Charles Williams belted a three-run home run.
Williams was one of four Rice players to make the all-tournament. He was joined by fellow Owls Jacob Baker (first base), Mario Ramos (starting pitcher) and Jesse Kurtz-Nicholl (relief pitcher).
