Fresno, Calif. - Senior Connie Krueger had one of her best shooting nights of the season, hitting four of eight three-pointers and adding 14 points, but it was not enough as the Lobos of New Mexico defeated Fresno State, 71-59. The loss drops the 'Dogs to 8-15 overall, 3-7 in WAC play. The Bulldogs are currenly in sixth place in the Pacific division, a 1/2 game ahead of San Diego State. Only the top six teams in each division will advance.
The game did not start off well for the 'Dogs. After winning the tip the 'Dogs proceeded to turn the ball over and New Mexico scored the first points of the game on a driving layup by Kristy Loiselle. Fresno State was held scoreless until 16:55 when a 10-foot jumper by Krueger put the 'Dogs on the board and had them down by 2, 4-2. Fresno State never led in the first half as the Lobos built up as much as a eight point lead in the first 20 minutes. The 'Dogs closed the gap to 21-27 at the half.
At the start of the second half the Bulldogs came out ready to play and went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 33-all with 15:48 left. During the run Tiffany Lewis had two consecutive layups, including the one that tied the game at 33.
The Lobos responded by outscoring the Bulldogs 10-2 over the next three minutes. From that point New Mexico never looked back as they went up by as much as 13. Sparked by Miranda Sanchez's 8-of-12 shooting and game-high 23 points, the Lobos pulled away to win the game.
Once again the Bulldogs were outperformed at the line with New Mexico making 31 trips to the charity stripe, converting on 22. The 'Dogs were 7-of-14 from the free throw line.
Fresno State now hits the road to face BYU on Thursday and division-leading Utah on Saturday. They return home for the final two games of the regular season on Feb. 25 versus San Diego State and Feb. 27 against Hawaii.
