Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State womens tennis player Dora Djilianova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) has been named the GTE/Co-SIDA Academic All-American of the Year for the womens spring at-large team. Track and fields Melissa Price (Kingsburg, Calif.) also earned first-team honors.
Djilianova leaves the Bulldogs as the schools all-time leader in victories, men or women, with 123. She finished her senior season as the No. 5 player in the nation after advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament in singles play. In her first competition as a professional, Djilianova took second in singles and doubles at the Visalia Open.
In the classroom, Djilianova was named to the Deans List every semester at Fresno State, earning the highest grade-point average possible on a 4.0 scale. A business major, this is the third time Djilianova has been named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America team, earning second-team honors in 1997 and 1998. She is also a four-time member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations All-Academic team. Djilianova plans to attend law school this fall.
This is the first Academic All-America honor for Price, the 1998 and 1999 NCAA Indoor pole vault champion. Price, a three-time NCAA All-American, also won both the indoor and outdoor WAC pole vault titles in 1999, giving her four WAC titles for her career. Since the NCAA began sponsoring the sport in 1998, Price is the only female who has won the conference championships. Recently, she took first place at USA Track and Fields Pontiac Grand Prix Invitational in Raleigh, N.C., clearing 13-9 1/4.
A business major with a focus on accountancy, Price was one of only 10 students selected for the Sid Craig School of Business honors program out of a pool of 2,500. A member of the Deans List, Price is Fresno States nominee for the WACs Stan Bates award, given annually to the conferences top male and female scholar -athletes.
Fresno State has now had 25 athletes named GTE/Co-SIDA Academic All-Americans since 1985. Djilianova is the second Bulldog to be named the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year after baseball player Tommy Minor earned the honor in 1994.
