Fresno, Calif. - Highlighted by 19 riders from the Fresno State Equestrian team, 93 Fresno State student-athletes were named to the Deans List for the Fall 1998 semester.
With 40 men and 53 women earning a GPA of 3.5 or better last fall, Fresno State saw an increase of 15 student-athletes from the Spring 1998 semester (78) who qualified for the Deans List this past semester.
The biggest improvement this fall was made by the mens basketball team. Led by Demetrius Porter, who had the highest GPA on the team, the basketball team had its highest team GPA since 1992.
Honoring its student-athletes for their academic success, the Third Annual Torch of Excellence Scholar Athletes Banquet will take place on Monday, May 3, 5:30 pm, at the Casablanca Hall.
The event is co-sponsored by Fresno States Athletic Academic Services and the 16 Fresno and Madera-area Kiwanis Clubs. This year Fresno State softball coach Margie Wright will deliver the keynote address. Tickets for this years banquet are $35 each or $300 for a table of 10. The general public may call Lucky Baltierra at (559) 438-0273 for information.
In 1998 over 200 scholar athletes were honored for a GPA of 3.0 or better.
"We are thankful that the Kiwanis have continued to offer their support and recognize the best at Fresno State," Fresno State Athletic Director Al Bohl said. "We were extremely proud that almost 40 percent of our student-athletes were honored at the occasion last year. Successes like that really exemplify the outstanding coaches that we have at Fresno State and the efforts of those in academic services."
