Bulldogs Extend Winning Streak to Four
The Bulldogs pulled out two 5-4 victories last week to improve their record to 4-2 overall and extend their win streak to four matches. On Friday, Feb. 19, Fresno State met 63rd-ranked Tulsa for a Western Athletic Conference matchup in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs received singles victories from freshman Kim Niggemeyer (Berlin, Germany), sophomore Liesl Fichtbauer (Hamburg, Germany) and junior Kandiss Creighton (Weldon, Calif.) to split singles with Tulsa, 3-3. In doubles, senior Dora Djilianova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and Fichtbauer won at No. 1 and junior Renee Kops-Jones (Fresno) and Niggemeyer were victorious at No. 3 to secure a Fresno State win. On Saturday, Feb. 20, against Washington State, Niggemeyer, Creighton and Fichtbauer once again came through for the Bulldogs, as the trio captured wins in singles to keep the match tied at three. In doubles, Fresno State was able to win at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to bring a 5-4 victory back to Fresno.
Djilianova Secures Highest Ranking of Career
Senior Dora Djilianova reached the highest singles ranking of her Fresno State tennis career at No. 7 in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings released on February 16. Djilianova is currently 19-7 on the season and 9-3 since the Spring season opened on January 16. In those nine wins, Djilianova has defeated six ranked players including Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt, ranked 7th at the time, at the Rolex National Indoors. One of Djilianova's only losses was to top-ranked Zuzana Lesenarova of San Diego. Djilianova's previous high in the ITA singles rankings was 15th during the 1997-98 season.
Mother Nature Strikes Again Strikes Again
The Fresno State womens tennis team was forced to suspend its second match of the season because of the weather. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play UNLV last Sunday, but wind gusts in excess of 30-mph forced the cancellation of the match. Rain forced the cancellation of the February 9 match at Stanford. Both matches will try to be rescheduled for dates later in the season.
