Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State already has made itself known on the field but in the classroom is where the Bulldogs have making a louder noise on the national level.
The NCAA announced the names of 107 student-athletes who will receive NCAA postgraduate scholarships, including a pair of All-Americans in tennis standout Dora Djilianova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) and two-time NCAA indoor pole vault champion Melissa Price (Kingsburg).
In 1964, the NCAA created a postgraduate scholarship program honoring outstanding student-athletes from member institutions who also are outstanding scholars. Helping her team advance to the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament, she was on the Deans List every semester at Fresno State and is the second female to be a three-time GTE Academic All-American. She is a four-time member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations All-Academic Team and plans to attend law school this fall.
Price, who just completed competition in the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Spain, is Fresno States first female individual national champion and will participate in the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg at the end of the month. The three-time WAC All-Academic and WAC Scholar-Athlete was also a member of the Deans List eight semesters while being a three-time All-American. This world-class athlete is a two-time NCAA champion in the indoor pole vault (1999, 98) and is the current NCAA recordholder in the indoor (13-11 1/4) and outdoor (14-3 1/2).
