Matched-up against size and physical play, the Fresno State Bulldogs set out to capitalize on their speed and agility in the first round of the Nike Husky Classic, but simply could not get past the Portland Pilots as key errors cost the ?Dogs three goals.
Forty minutes of hard, direct play preceded the first goal of the game. At the 40:17 minute-mark an error in communication during a routine pass from a Bulldog defender to keeper Jeremy Proud cost a goal as a pass intended for Proud was tipped too far to the right and recovered by unguarded Pilot Kelly Gray who slapped in an uncontested goal from the corner. The half concluded with a Pilot score of 1-0.
Back on the field from the 10 minute intermission, the ?Dogs regained control of the game at the 56:36 minute-mark as Ryan Katz capitalized off a Bulldog corner kick heading in a pass from Dana McGregor tying the score up at 1-1.
The celebration did not last long however as the rough Pilots regained composure finding net at the 64:08 minute mark. Attempting to recover the ball before Portland could get off a shot, Bulldog keeper Proud collided with Pilot shooter Coner Casey as fans watched the ball dribble into the net as the two recuperated on the ground.
With the clock running down the Bulldogs put up a valiant fight, but the game slipped away as Casey lofted a shot into the net again at the 87:35 minute-mark off a breakaway pass down the midfield putting the game away 3-1.
