FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Billy Volek tossed four touchdown passes to lead Fresno State to a 34-6 win over Portland State Saturday.
Volek, playing in three quarters, passed for 200 yards and completed 13-of-20 passes.
Curtis Edwards' interception and 54-yard return set up Fresno State's first score early in the first quarter. Two plays after the interception, Volek found Vince Branstetter open for a 10-yard scoring pass.
Volek tossed a 19-yard scoring pass to Rodney Wright later in the first quarter and then had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Billy Jack Pierce, giving Fresno a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Wright finished with a team-high six receptions for 94 yards.
Dan Frantz booted a 35-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to get Portland State on the scoreboard.
Volek found Charles Smith wide open on a 45-yard scoring pass less than two minutes into the second half. After Frantz hit on a 43-yard field goal, Paris Gaines dove in from one-yard out for Fresno State's final score.
Charles Dunn led Portland State with 100 yards rushing while quarterback Jimmy Blanchard passed for 195 yards. Wide receiver Orshawante Bryant had a big night with 11 receptions for 108 yards.
