Women's Soccer Defeats WAC Foe Hawaii 4-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State wins their second straight Western Athletic Conference match in their 4-1 victory over Hawaii.
Junior forward Reyna Green (Modesto, Calif.) put the Bulldogs on the board early in the first half. Freshman forward Jackie Jewell (Visalia, Calif.) led Green with a nice cross and from there Green beat one defender and shot the ball over the Hawaii goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez at 24:11. Four minutes later Jewell on a breakaway dribbled around the Sanchez and shot the ball into the open net. This was Jewell's second game winning goal in three games and her third goal of the season. Five minutes before the end of the first half Sophomore Amber Houchen (Clovis, Calif.) scored on a breakaway from the right side of the field booted the ball past Sanchez into the upper left corner of the goal. Houchen had been searching for her first goal of her career and tonight she put herself in the books. Last Sunday against Colgate Houchen nailed two shots that sailed just high of the goal, but this Sunday she placed the ball beautifully in the back of the net.
Senior forward Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored at the 59-minute mark off a penalty kick. Green was pulled down in the box by a Hawaii defender giving the Bulldogs the penalty kick. Pearson placed her goal in the upper right corner giving the Hawaii goalkeeper no chance to defend it.
Late in the second half Hawaii ended the Bulldog shutout when midfielder Malia Beter received a cross inside the box and shot the ball around the diving Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.). Wahl had 3 save on 5 Hawaii shots while allowing only one goal.
The Bulldogs return to action next Friday Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium for a WAC match against Tulsa (6-4-1)(1-1-0). On Sunday Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. the Bulldogs continue their WAC schedule against UTEP in Bulldog Stadium.
