FRESNO, Calif. - Britt King, Fresno State women's basketball coach, has announced the signing of four players - Cophie Moore (Arlington, Texas/Arlington HS), Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C./Paul Lawrence Dunbar), Aritta Lane (Alea, Hawaii/Alea) and Lisa Copeland (Orchard Lake, Mich./West Broomfield) - to national letters of intent to play for Fresno State beginning in the 2001-02 season.
"We are very excited about the talent the four players bring to the Bulldogs," King said. "Each player is capable of coming in and making an immediate impact. They are also very athletic and will allow us to play an up-tempo style of basketball."
Moore, a 5-foot 10-inch guard/forward, has been a standout in her career at Arlington High School, averaging 14.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. She was named first-team all-district and AHS's most valuable player last year.
"Cophie is a swing player whose ability to play on the perimeter or inside will bring us more versatility," King added.
Barnes is a 5-foot 10-inch two-guard who will provide the Bulldogs with a scoring punch. She averaged 20.3 points and nine rebounds per game her junior year at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School and was named first-team All-DCIAA by the Washington Post.
"Joanna is a pure scorer," King said. "She will be a very integral part of the recruiting class because of her ability to put the ball in the basket. You look at the numbers she has put up in high school and you can tell she is a talented player."
Lane, a 6-foot forward, has been a third-team all-state and a second-team all-league pick. She has averaged 14.0 points per game in her high school career. An excellent athlete, Lane was also a highly recruited volleyball player but chose to play basketball in college.
"Arrita is a very aggressive player inside," King said. "She has excellent leaping ability and will be a tremendous help to us on the boards."
A 5-foot 10-inch guard/forward, Copeland was an all-state honorable mention last year. She has averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in her career at West Bloomfield High School. Copeland has been named first-team all-area, all-league, first-team all-county and was her team's captain as a junior.
"Lisa is an excellent outside shooter, and with her height gives us a taller perimeter shooter."
