FRESNO, Calif.- - Travelling to USC for their first dive-only meet of the season, Fresno State struggled against some fearsome opponents at the Invitational held Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16-18.
Freshmen Nicole Recupito (Kokomo, Ind.) and Rachel Azevedo (Clovis, Calif.) valiantly fought against some of the largest schools in the West. Recupito finished 19th in the 1-meter (169.55), 25th in the 3-meter (168.70) and seventh in the platform (232.90). Azevedo finsished 25th in the 1-meter (150.85), 24th in the 3-meter (169.25) and did not compete in the platform event.
The diving team had been copmprised of three divers earlier in the season, but two quit. Azevedo joined in late October and the USC invite was her third meet. Being a freshman as well, Recupito has been in only five meets at the collegiate level. The USC Invitational was not only just about competing against the other teams but against themselves.
"It was very intimidating," Azevedo said. "It was so much more than I thought it would be, some of those divers were phenomenal. Nicole and I didn't do as well as we had hoped but we were there, and we competed."
The 'Dogs will return to action on Friday, Dec. 1, when they compete at the BYU Diving Invitational.
