Fichtbauer Leads Women's Tennis At ITA Northwest Regionals

FRESNO, Calif. -- No. 8 seed Liesl Fichtbauer advanced to the third round of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Thursday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Palo Alto.
The Bulldog senior defeated Washington State's Anna Dybicz 6-1, 6-1 in the second round after earning a first round bye. As of Thursday afternoon, she was the only Fresno State player who had advanced as far.
The same could not be said for All-American junior Kim Niggemeyer, who retired at the end of the second set with the score 0-6, 6-1. Niggemeyer, the tournament's No. 4 seed, was ousted by Washington's Erin Hoe.
Sophomore Kelly Ramirez edged Stacy McKenna of Washington State 6-3, 6-4 before falling to the tournament's No. 1 seed Laura Granville of Stanford 6-2, 6-0. Junior Chantel Wiggins was defeated by No.12 seed Courtney Perkins of Portland 6-1, 6-3 in the second round after earning a first round bye.
Three Bulldog netters won their first round match but had yet to play their second round contests. Junior Simone Jardim coasted past St. Mary's Karen Holland 6-0, 6-2 and will face California's Marissa Yang in the second round, junior Ewa Grusiecka outlasted Pooja Dehmukh of Idaho 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and will play No. 2 seed Kristina Kraszewski of Washington in the second round and freshman Courtney Jantz defeated Oregon's Courtney Nagle 6-4, 6-3 and draws Ana Bihler of Nevada in the next round.
