Bulldogs Capture Fourth Place at Winter Nationals
Six members of the Fresno State equestrian team combined to take fourth place at the Tournament of Champions in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The tournament, hosted by Middle Tennessee State and dubbed the "winter nationals," included 26 colleges from 18 different states. Last year the team earned its first invitation after a finishing sixth at an NCAA Invitational in November of 1998. Seniors Kim Dellar (Coarsegold, Calif.), Hayley Elliot (Ventura, Calif.) and Katy Woelful (Los Gatos, Calif.), junior Ashley Howard (Visalia, Calif.) and sophomores Dawn Crawford (Hesperia, Calif.) and Sarah Woodward (Fresno, Calif.) all represented the Bulldogs in Tennessee . The `Dogs finished behind two former reserve national champions in Virginia Intermont and St. Lawrence with strong performances from all six participants. Howard and Crawford turned in stellar showings with Howard taking first in Walk/Trot and Crawford capturing first in the Intermediate Fences. Both advanced to the finals in their respective events and both took the Reserve High Point rider award.
Home Show Up Next
The team returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12-13, for its first two home shows of the Spring. The `Dogs earned High Point honors during both shows in the Fall. Stanford, Cal Poly, Reedley, UC Davis and Bakersfield will be participating.
Change in Schedule
A double western show at Reedley College, scheduled for February 5th, has been changed to March 11th. The Tournament of Champions at New Mexico State is also scheduled for that day.
Holiday Cheer
Over the holidays, members of the team spread the good spirit by joining up to collect toys and coats for charitable funds. The team gathered toys for a program called Toys for Tots that occurs annually during Christmas time. The team also participated in the annual Coats for Kids program. The team accumulated and delivered more than 50 coats to Kastner Intermediate School for families in need of such apparel.
