FRESNO, Calif. - No. 19 Fresno State dropped its second consecutive game Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs lost to California 12-10 in 12 innings at Pete Beiden Field. Fresno State saw its record drop to 11-4, while the Golden Bears improved to 6-10. It was the first time the Bulldogs have lost back-to-back games since Jan. 28-29.
The Bulldogs jumped to an early 4-0 lead on the strength of left fielder Anthony Acevedo's (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) third-inning grand slam, his third home run of the season. It was the first grand slam of the season for the Bulldogs. However, Cal responded with a five-run fourth and a four-run fifth to take a 9-4 lead. Fresno State rallied with a five-run seventh to knot the game at nine and the contest went into extra innings.
Both teams plated a run in the 10th inning, but Golden Bear left fielder Curtis Johnson tagged Bulldog reliever Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) for a two-run home run in the top of the 12th to seal the victory. It was Johnson's first home run of the season.
Ron Meyer picked up the win for Cal, as he tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and walking three. Meyer improved to 1-0 for the season. Seven Cal pitchers combined to walk 14 Bulldogs in the two-run victory.
Hannah allowed two runs on three hits and walked one in his two innings of relief. He saw his record fall to 2-2 for the season. Ben Fritz (Fr., San Jose, Calif.) allowed three runs (two earned) on a pair of hits and struck out three in his first collegiate start for the Bulldogs. Zach Minor (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) was solid in relief, shutting out the Bears on two hits and striking out four in his 2.2 innings of work.
Right fielder Mike Bowlin (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) paced the offense by going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Acevedo was 1-for-7 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Second baseman Scott Beshears (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) made his first start of the season and was 0-for-3 with four walks and two runs scored. Shortstop Josh Labandeira (Jr., Porterville, Calif.) went 0-for-5 and his hitting streak ended at 12 games.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, March 2, when they host Hawai'i-Hilo in the beginning of a three-game WAC series. Fresno State will send right-hander Tom Graham (Sr., Modesto, Calif.) to the mound. Graham is 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA in five starts this season. First pitch at Beiden Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
