FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State relief pitcher Mike Hernandez (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) was named WAC Pitcher of the Week Monday. It is the seventh time a Bulldog has been named either player or pitcher of the week this season.
The 6-foot-3 southpaw won two games out of the Bulldog bullpen last week. Hernandez allowed five hits, struck out 12 and walked only one in his nine scoreless innings of work during Fresno State's 3-1 week. In Tuesday's 3-1 victory against Sacramento State, Hernandez pitched a then-career-high 4.1 innings, while striking out a career-best eight en route to his second collegiate victory. He then pitched a career-high 4.2 innings and picked up the win in Saturday's 6-3 victory against Rice. Hernandez shut out the Owls on four singles and struck out four hitters.
For the season, he is a perfect 3-0 with a 4.66 ERA in 11 appearances (one start). Hernandez also has struck out 24 hitters in 19.1 innings pitched.
No. 19/23 (USA Today Baseball Weekly/Baseball America/Collegiate Baseball) Fresno State returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Loyola Marymount in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
