FRESNO, Calif. - No. 19 Fresno State bounced back from its worst loss of the season to post a 5-1 victory against Bowling Green on Wednesday night at Pete Beiden Field. The Bulldogs improved to 16-5, while the Falcons saw their record drop to 0-5-1 for the season.
Fresno State tagged Bowling Green starter Doug Flere for a pair of runs in the third innings and three more in the fifth to jump out to a comfortable 5-0 lead. Bulldog starter Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) made sure there would be no rally.
The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff single to Nick Elrod. He would allow only one run on five hits in his 8.1 innings of work. Hintz walked two, struck out seven and saw his record improve to 3-1 for the season. Hans Smith (Sr., Central Point, Ore.) relieved Hintz with runners on the corners in the ninth and slammed the door for his fourth save of the year and the 12th of his career.
"Beau pitched really well for us tonight," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "He was in command for most of the game until the late innings. Then he tried to get too fine with his pitches. Overall, it was a really good game for us. We didn't hit the way we are capable of, but we got enough runs to win the ballgame."
Five of Fresno State's seven hits went for extra bases on the night (three doubles and two triples). Brandon Gemoll (So., San Jose, Calif.) paced the offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. It was his team-best 12th multi-hit game of the season.
Flere allowed five runs on six hits in picking up the loss. His record fell to 0-1 for the season. A pair of Falcon relievers shut out the Bulldogs over the final five innings on one hit.
Fresno State returns to action Thursday night when it will take on Southern Illinois (7-4). Right-hander Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) is scheduled to get the start for the Bulldogs. Hannah is 3-2 with a 4.03 ERA this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Beiden Field (A complete list of Thursday's game can be found below).
