FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball made it a clean sweep for the second time this season as sophomore second baseman Lovie Jung (Westminster) and senior right-hander Amanda Scott (Clovis) were selected Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The No. 3 batter in the line up, Jung helped the Bulldogs to a 6-0 record, including a 4-0 mark in WAC play, after batting .500 (9-18) with six runs, three doubles, walk, four RBI and 12 total bases for a .667 slugging percentage last week. In conference play, Jung hit .583 (7-12) with four runs, two doubles, RBI, walk, and nine total bases for a .750 slugging percentage.
Leading Fresno State and the WAC in RBI (29), total bases (66) and doubles (10) while ranking second in the conference in hitting percentage (.383) and hits (51), Jung has team-high 17 multiple-hit games to go along with seven multiple-RBI.
Recording seven doubles and scoring at least one run in seven of her last 11 contests, Jung batted .333 (2-6) with two runs, a double, three RBI and turned two double plays against Cal Poly. Against Portland State, she had a perfect performance at the plate, going 4-4 with team-high three runs while collecting her 10th double and adding a RBI. Against San Jose State, she hit .333 (2-6) with a run.
Batting .500 in the month of April, Jung brings a five-game hitting streak (.563 BA, 9-16, six runs, four RBI, three doubles, walk, 12 total bases, .750 slug pct.) into this week's of action. This is Jung's first career WAC Player of the Week honor.
Scott, who has now been a six-time WAC Pitcher of the Week pick this season, tossed a pair of one-hitters (Cal Poly and San Jose State) and a two-hitter (Portland State) with three shutout wins last week.
Averaging 9.77 strikeouts per seven innings over the three games, Scott posted two 10-strikeout games and picked up her fourth save on the year (Cal Poly) while extending her unearned run streak to 57.2 innings.
Winning her last eight consecutive starts, seven of which have been shutout victories, Scott also owns a current streak of 28.1 scoreless innings.
Scott, who has posted her second straight 200-strikeout season, is the only Bulldog to notch back-to-back 200 strikeout seasons and is on pace to shatter her won single-season strikeout record of 231 set last season with a current mark of 212. In addition, she is the second Bulldog to ever record 200 or more strikeouts in a season twice in a career (Wende Ward, 226 in 1981 and 209 in 1983).
In 24 starts this year, Scott has completed 22 games and has recorded 18 shutout victories in those 24 starts. Nationally ranked in ERA, wins and saves, she leads Fresno State and the WAC in ERA (0.45), wins (22), strikeouts and saves.
Fresno State will close out its 14-game homestand tomorrow night with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Pacific on Wednesday, April 12. The Bulldogs will then resume WAC play this weekend in Honolulu with a pair of doubleheaders on Friday, April 14, 8:00 (PDT) and Saturday, April 15, 7:00 p.m. (PDT).
