FRESNO, Calif. - Janet Henry (Chicago, Ill./Luther South), one of the nation's top high school centers, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball next year for Fresno State, head coach Britt King announced today.
Henry, a 6-foot 4-inch center, was rated as the top unsigned player in the nation in the March edition of The All-Star Girls Report. She had also been recruited by Michigan State, DePaul, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois, Alabama and Kentucky. Henry averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks, five steals and three assists per game last year for Luther South High School. She also led her conference in points per game and scored 43 in one contest.
"Signing one of the nation's best players shows the direction in which our program is moving," King said. "Janet complements our nationally ranked early signing class and I'm excited about developing these players over the next four years."
Henry joins the early signing class, rated 50th best in the nation by the Women's Basketball Journal. The class also includes 6-4 center Destiny Holford (Bakersfield, Calif./West), 6-3 center Mindy Clark (La Habra, Calif./Sonora), 6-1 guard/forward Devon Crosby-Helms (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and 6-1 guard/forward Chantea Fleming (San Bernardino, Calif./Ayala).
Fresno State was 11-18 last year but has the nucleus of the squad returning. Among the returnees are five freshmen who accounted for 55 percent of the offense and received significant playing time. Included in that group is Lindsay Logan (Fr., Sandy, Utah), who finished 10th in the nation in assists (6.62), was named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team and broke Fresno State's single-season assist record by posting 192, shattering the former record of 169 set in 1987 by Wendy Martell. She also became the first freshman in history to lead the WAC in assists.
