FRESNO, Calif. - It is still cold back at home. Last week the weather consisted of scattered showers and lows in the mid-40's. Lindsay Foster admits that she does not miss the blustery weather. In fact the freshman from St. Louis, Mo., does not really miss anything from her life in the Midwest. Her new life at Fresno State suits her just fine.
"Moving here wasn't that big of an adjustment," Foster, the only Bulldog not from the West Coast, said. "The weather is a lot colder at home but it's not as different as I expected it to be and I never did get homesick. I call home a lot, but I really like it here."
It was not just the weather that attracted the 6-footer to the sunny coast. Fresno State softball was the main attraction.
"Softball is not as popular in the Midwest as it is here on the coast. It is a lot more serious in California and in the West in general," Foster said. "At home the competition just isn't as great as it is here."
Something that has made joining the Bulldogs team more challenging and exciting for Foster. The high level of competition is an added bonus to the already rich experience Foster has absorbed over the past few months getting to know her new teammates.
"I really like this team," Foster said. "Everybody gets along really well and although there are a lot of different personalities on this team we all pull together."
Seeing action in two games so far this season and earning a win against Harvard, Foster said her primary role on this successful team is one of encouragement and support. Support that she hopes will eventually help the Bulldogs to the World Series.
"I'm not much of a vocal leader," Foster said. "I'm not a `yeller', but I give encouragement to my teammates. I want to eventually make a place for myself on this team," Foster said. "But for now my goals are the same as everybody else's, to win the World Series."
With the attainable championship title game still months away, Foster says she is confident in her role and the ability of her teammates to duplicate the 1998 Fresno State National Champion year.
"There's a lot of good things happening on this team as far as playing goes. I really think we are going to put everything together and make it happen," Foster said.
