FORT WORTH, Texas - Fresno State scored six runs in the final two innings and picked up a hard-earned 8-3 victory against TCU on Saturday afternoon at TCU Diamond. The Bulldogs improved to 27-9 overall and 10-4 in the WAC with the victory, while TCU dropped its fourth consecutive game and dropped to 13-25 overall and 4-9 in conference tilts.
Fresno State scored single runs in the first and fifth innings against Horned Frog starter Shawn Thompson to jump out to a 2-0 lead. However, TCU designated hitter Cade Harris launched a two-run home run off Bulldog starting pitcher Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) to knot the game at two in the sixth. Fresno State erupted for four runs in the eighth to take the lead for good. The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth after TCU responed with a run in its half of the eighth.
"We got a lot of clutch hits today," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "A lot of players came through when we needed it. It was a good team effort. When the game got to the wire and we needed to get the job done, we did."
Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) relieved Hannah in the sixth and picked up his fourth win of the season. Hintz allowed one run on three hits and struck out four in three innings pitched. He improved to 4-3 for the season. Hannah allowed two runs on six hits in his 5.1 innings of work. He walked five and struck out seven. Zach Minor (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) registered the game's final two outs for the Bulldogs.
"We got good relief pitching again today," Bennett said. "Hintz set everyone down and gave us a chance to get ahead late in the game. Hannah did a pretty good job and gave us five good innings. He just got that one pitch up for the home run. When you get timely hits and good pitching, you usually win ballgames."
Eight of the nine starters on offense recorded at least one hit on the afternoon. Leadoff hitter Tom Creighton (So., Weldon, Calif.) continued to shine, as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Creighton reached base by either hit, walk or hit by pitch in the 25th consecutive contest. Anthony Acevedo (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for his team-leading 12th multi-RBI game of the season. Brandon Gemoll (So., San Jose, Calif.) was 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI. It was his team-leading 18th multi-hit tilt of the year.
Thompson picked up the loss for the Horned Frogs, as he allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 7.1 innings pitched. He walked one and struck out six in dropping to 3-4 for the season. Chad Durham relieved Thompson in the eighth and allowed two runs (one earned) on a pair of hits in one inning of action. Shaun Wooley recorded the final two outs for the Horned Frogs.
Fresno State will seek its fifth series sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon. Nick Moran (So., Elk Grove, Calif.) is scheduled to make his second start of the year for the Bulldogs. Moran is 1-0 with a 4.24 ERA in nine appearances. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PDT) at TCU Diamond.
