The University of Florida Softball (44-28) team will make its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the four-year program and will play the Cal Bears (45-22) as the No. 4 Seed in the double-elimination Region 6 bracket at Fresno State May 18-21, officials announced Sunday night.
The UF-Cal match-up is set for 5:30 p.m., Eastern, May 18. Host Fresno State (51-12) plays Northeast Conference Champion and No. 6 Seed UMBC (30-26) at 10:30 p.m. No. 2 Seed Cal State-Fullerton (44-13), the Big West Conference Champion and Texas (29-25-1) round out the field with an 8 p.m. start.
Forty-eight teams are selected, 24 of which are automatic qualifiers. UF is 18-16 against the entire bracket, but Cal is the only team from its regional the Gators have faced this year. UF lost 6-1 in eight innings to the then-No. 8. Six Southeastern Conference teams were invited, second only to the Pac-10, which had all eight teams make it.
The winner of each region advances to the Women's College World Series, May 25-29 at the Don Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They will be re-seeded into the championship bracket.
It was the second piece of good news the Gators received today. After leading her team in hitting and setting a Southeastern Conference Tournament record, UF's starting shortstop became the first Gator freshman to be named to the All-Tournament Team, the league announced Sunday.
Jupiter, Fla., native Jenn Mossadeghi (The King's Academy) led the UF squad with a .333 (2-for-6) offensive effort. Both of her hits were doubles and came against Arkansas, a semi-finalist, setting an SEC Tournament record for doubles in a game.
