Volleyball Drops WAC Opener to #2 Hawai'i

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (7-8, 0-1) slipped below .500 for the first time this season after opening Western Athletic Conference play with second-ranked Hawai'i (11-0, 1-0) at home.
With 14 different Bulldogs seeing action in the match, the Bulldogs dropped a three-game decision to the three-time defending WAC champions by the scores of 15-5, 15-4 and 15-10.
Fresno State was led by junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid who collected nine kills and two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett chipped in seven kills as did freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey. Senior defensive specialist Leilua Satele had a match-high six digs.
Hawai'i was led by Lily Kahumoku's match-high 15 kills. She also hit .462 (15-3-26) while serving up two aces and collecting three digs and a block. Jessica Sudduth added 11 kills and hit .474 (11-2-19) and had four digs. Veronica Lima tallied nine kills while Maja Gustin had seven kills and a match-high seven total blocks.
Fresno State will look to get back at the .500 level tomorrow night in the North Gym with a 7:00 pm WAC match against Nevada.
