FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (8-8, 1-1 WAC) evened its overall record and Western Athletic Conference mark with a five-game thriller over Nevada at home after winning game one and the last two.
The Bulldogs took a 15-12, 10-15, 7-15, 15-8 and 15-13 decision over the Wolf Pack to break their four-match losing streak.
Fresno State had four players post double-figure kills and four collect double-figure digs in the victory that improved the 'Dogs home court record to 3-6.
Freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey led the way with a match- and season-high 24 kills while collecting a team-best 13 digs to go along with three blocks. Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid chipped in 17 kills and had a career-high nine blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett and sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Closs chipped in 11 kills a piece. Burnett also had 12 digs. Senior defensive specialist Leilua Satele has 12 digs while freshman outside hitter Taniesha Tilque had a season-best 10 digs.
As a team, Fresno State hit .221 while tallying 82 kills to Nevada's 79. With the Bulldogs holding a slight edge in digs (73-71), Fresno State won the battle at the net with 16 total blocks while the Wolf Pack had 10. Fresno State also had a season-high 28 block assists.
Nevada, which hit .241 in the match, had four players in double-digits. The Wolf Pack was led by Michelle More (20 kills, eight digs, four blocks). Tiffany Oliver collected 18 kills and had five blocks. Suzanne Stonebarger chipped in 16 kills and had a match-high 17 digs while Lauren Heri added 13 kills and had 16 digs with three blocks.
Fresno State, which opened the year at 5-0, has won three of its last 10 as it enters WAC action on the road next week at UTEP (Oct. 5) and Rice (Oct. 7).
