FRESNO, Calif. - Preparation for 2001 Season
With five starters back, Fresno State will begin preparation for the 2001 season next Monday, Jan. 15, at Bulldog Diamond. Fresno State's 16-member team is loaded with young talent as ten underclassmen dot the roster. Led by All-America outfielder Becky Witt (Reseda, Calif.) and all-Western Athletic Conference shortstop Alicia Dowland (La Palma, Calif.), the Bulldogs are coming off a 54-14 season after advancing to its 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament. In addition, Fresno State will look to capture its fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference title and fifth crown overall in six years.
Meet the Team Activities Set
Meet the Team activities are coming up quickly. In two weeks, the 2001 Bulldog softball team will be making the rounds around town. Up first is the 'Dogs annual halftime demonstration at the men's basketball game versus UTEP on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Selland Arena. On Saturday, Jan. 27, fans can meet the team at Fashion Fair Mall. Team posters, schedule cards, and season ticket applications will be available to the public. That night, the 13th Annual Meet the Team Dinner and Silent Auction will take place at TorNino's. The silent auction will begin at 6:00 pm and the dinner and program will follow at 7:00 pm. The following day, the Bulldogs will do a demonstration at the women's basketball game against Nevada.
Bulldog Softball Bus Tours
Fresno State already has two bus trips set up for the upcoming season. The first trip is to the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in Poway, Calif. The three-day, 12-team tournament field will have the Bulldogs battling Iowa State, host San Diego State, Michigan, CS Northridge and New Mexico. The bus will leave the campus on Friday, Feb. 16, 5:00 am. Check in to the Clarion Bay View hotel will take place after the 'Dogs 1:00 pm game against the Cyclones. The Clarion is located in the Gaslamp District, noted for is restaurants and clubs as well as being within walking distance of the Horton Plaza, Seaport Village, the Paladion, the Convention Center and the trolley to Mexico. The round trip motor coach with two nights stay, transportation to the games, and tournament pass is $239 per person. Reservations are being taken through Jan. 22. In addition, a bus trip is scheduled for the San Jose State doubleheader on April 7. The up and back trip and ticket to the games is $40 per person. For details: 225-3164.
Lunch with Margie
Four dates have been set to have lunch with Margie at the Silver Dollar Hofbrau, 11:30 am: Feb. 12, March 12, April 16 and May 7.
