FRESNO, Calif. - The Blue 'Dogs came back from a five-run deficit to defeat the Gray 'Dogs 13-12. The Blue squad used a five-run seventh inning to tie the score highlighted by junior Brian Pierce's (Clovis, Calif.) grand slam. It was Pierce's third homerun of the series.
"I've been getting a lot of off-speed stuff throughout the series," said Pierce, "but I just try to be patient and sit on the fastball."
Sophomore Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) hit the game-winning homer off sophomore Jason Gutknecht (Madera, Calif.) in the top of the eigth inning to win it for the Blue 'Dogs.
The Blue 'Dogs appeared to be in trouble in the first three innings as they trailed 10-2. Senior Anthony Bernal (Cayucos, Calif.) was roughed up in three innings giving up eight earned runs and ten total.
Freshman Nate Lee (Fresno, Calif.) checked in, however, and quieted the Gray Team pitching six innings allowing only two runs and striking out six. Lee picked up his third win of the series.
The Gray 'Dogs were led by sophomore Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.) who went 3-4 with two RBI, two runs and a homerun. Senior Jared Walker went 2-5 with three runs and an RBI. Junior Joey Myers went 1-4 with a run and two RBI.
It was the highest scoring game of the series as the teams combined for 25 runs and 27 hits.
"Throughout the series we've been swinging the bats well so I'm really pleased about that," said Coach Bennett "I like to see the hitters be aggressive at the plate so hopefully it will carry on to our preseason and regular season."
With the win the Blue 'Dogs wrap up the series with a 4-1 edge over the Gray 'Dogs.
