Golf Team Scores Another Top Five Finish

The Fresno State golf team finished play today under windy conditions at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. The team finished in fourth place with a score of 280-276-288-844 (-20). The team finished behind Ohio State, San Diego State, and Nevada.
Ohio's final score was 287-268-281-836 (-28). San Diego's final score was 278-273-286-837 (-27). Nevada's final score was 280-274-288-842 (-22).
Junior Nick Watney (Dixion, Calif.) won the tournament with a score of 69 -67-70-206 (-10). He finished just one stoke ahead of Ohio State's Justin Collins and UTEP's Chris Baryla. Collins had a final score of 74-68-65-207 (-9) and Baryla's final score was 70-69-68-207 (-9).
Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) moved from 28th place after two rounds Monday to sixth place Tuesday. His final score was 70-72-67-209 (-7). Smith placed third in the last tournament that he played in. He shot a 68-71-74-231 at the Pacific Invitational on Oct 23.
"Dustin played very good today," said coach Watney. "He jumped 22 places."
Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) finished 17th with a final score of 69 -68-75-212. Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin, Calif.) finished 40th with a final score of 72-70-76-218 (+2). Freshman Ian Nelson (Canyon Lake, Calif.) finished 59th with a score of 72-71-82-225 (+9).
A 17-team field participated in the Aztec Invitational. They are Ohio State, Nevada, Washington State, Portland State, BYU, UTEP, Denver, Southern Utah, Georgia State, Texas - San Antonio, East Washington, Weber State, Wichita State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, SDSU Black, and Fresno State.
"This is one of the toughest fields we have played against this season," Watney said.
The team played 54 holes at the Barona Creek Golf Club. The par 72 course has a rating of 74.5. The slope is 139 and the course is 7,088 yards long. The course is built on a reservation and was designed by Gary Roger Baird. There is water on eight holes, wide fairways, and natural elevation changes through out the course.
