FRESNO, Calif. - The awards keep rolling in for Fresno State quarterback David Carr, who today was named the winner of the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the nation's top passer. The award was selected by a panel of college head coaches and has been presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio, every year since 1959.
Carr, who led the nation in both passing yards (4,308) and touchdown passes (42), previously won the Johnny Unitas Award as the top senior quarterback. Carr is the second Bulldog to win the award. Fresno State's Trent Dilfer won the same award in 1993.
"It's a great honor for David," said head coach Pat Hill. "Not only because of the prestige of the award because Sammy Baugh was a legendary passer, but also because it was selected by college coaches. The list of NFL quarterbacks who have won this award is amazing. David is in great company."
Carr will be honored at a banquet in Columbus on Feb. 9.
