The Bulldogs, who finished second nationally in the turnover margin, turned the ball over an uncharacteristic five times in the game which led directly to 24 Colorado points. The Buffaloes, Big Eight runner-up, led the entire game, once by as many as 18 points, but were never able to put the Bulldogs away.
Fresno State trailed 20-3 with one second left in the first half, but before time could run out Jamie Christian and Malcolm Seabron combined on an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown pulling the Bulldogs within 10 (20-10) heading into the second half.
The remaining 30 minutes were filled with scoring as the Buffaloes connected for 21 more points including a 40-yard run by Buffaloes' Salaam and a 28-yard fumble return by Leomiti. The Bulldogs contributed to the excitement closing in on the Buffaloes scoring three touchdowns of their own. Daigle found the endzone on a 1-yard carry in the third quarter followed by two Tydas Winans' TDs near the end of the third quarter and again at the conclusion of the fourth.
The Bulldogs, who came into the contest ranked 20th nationally in rushing (221.6 ypg), were held to just three net yards in the bowl contest. The Bulldogs out-gained the Buffaloes in total yards, 526-395.
