What's Coming Up
Fresno State hits the road for a one game this week, taking on Nevada on Sunday at 2 p.m at Lawlor Events Center.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs went 1-1 in their final two home games of the season last week, defeating Tulsa 72-58 before falling to conference leader TCU 74-67.
Terrific Trio
Fresno State's dynamic trio of Lindsay Logan (16.8 ppg), Omelogo Udeze (13.3 ppg) and Tiffany Simon (12.7 ppg) is the most prolific in the Western Athletic Conference. Each is averaging more than 12 points per game, making them the only threesome in the conference who can boast that accomplishment. Fresno State is also the only WAC team with three players ranked in the top 11 in scoring average. In addition, Udeze is tops in field goal percentage (.512) and second in rebounds (9.7 per game) while Lindsay Logan leads the conference in several statistical categories, including assists (5.8 per game) and three-pointers per game (3.0).
In a League of Her Own
Lindsay Logan has established herself as a bonafide WAC player of the year candidate this season. She is currently averaging 16.8 points per game, fifth-best in the WAC, and 5.80 assists per game, tops in the conference. She also leads the WAC in three-pointers per game (3.0), games scoring in double figures (24), is second in minutes per game (36.6) and eighth in steals (1.88). Her most impressive performance to date came Jan. 28, a mesmerizing 32-point performance in a victory against SMU, in which she hit the game-winner with 12 seconds left.
Back to Eight Players
After sitting out 14 games with a stress fracture in her left shin, Chantea Fleming returned to action last week, playing in both games. The Bulldogs were 5-9 in her absence. Her return marked the first time since Jan. 12 FS had eight healthy players available for a game.
Scouting Nevada
Nevada comes into its lone contest this week 14-11 (7-6 WAC) sporting a two-game winning streak. Whether it's home cooking or the elevation, something inspires the Wolf Pack when they play in Reno. Nevada is 11-2 and averages nearly 79 points per game at Lawlor Events Center. Conversely, the Wolf Pack is only 2-9 in road games and averages just 62.9 points per game. Despite the home-road discrepancy, Nevada still comes into this week leading the WAC in scoring offense at 71.9 points per game. The team is led by sophomore forward/center Kate Smith and her 18.7 scoring average. Three other Wolf Pack average more than 8.9 points per game, including Kate Golomb, who chips in 9.8 a contest.
Fresno State All-Time vs. Nevada
Fresno State leads the all-time series 14-3, although FS holds only a narrow 3-2 lead in the last five contests. FS has also won four of the seven meetings in Reno. The last matchup between the Wolf Pack and Bulldogs came Jan. 20 when Fresno State held Nevada to 27 percent shooting in a 60-51 victory at the North Gym.
Nevada Recent Action
Nevada went 2-0 last week, stunning the WAC's last undefeated team, TCU, 71-63 before taking out Tulsa 94-77. Against the Horned Frogs, Kate Smith scored 20 points and the Wolf Pack held TCU to only 19 points in handing the Frogs their first conference loss. Two days later, Nevada shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor and received at least 10 points from six different players, including 22 from WAC player of the week Angie Heer.
Fresno State vs. Nevada - The Last Time
(FRESNO, Calif. - Jan. 20, 2001) - In front of the largest crowd to ever watch a game at the North Gym, Fresno State's defense paved the way for a 60-51 victory over Nevada before 1,441 at the North Gym. FS held the Wolf Pack to 1-of-13 shooting over the final 7:41 of the contest, and the Bulldogs' offense took advantage, outscoring Nevada 15-6 in that time span to grab a victory. Tiffany Simon led Fresno State with 18 points while Omelogo Udeze had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Doubling Up
A big question coming into the 2000-01 campaign was who would fill the rebounding void left by Tiffany Lewis, who graduated last year as one of the best on the boards in program history. That player has turned out to be Omelogo Udeze, who is turning in one of the most dominating rebounding seasons in FS history. She is averaging 15.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per game in WAC games, including double-doubles in seven of the last nine games and in nine of FS's 12 conference contests. She earned WAC player of the week honors Jan. 8 after tallying a career-high 22 points and 15 rebounds in a victory over UTEP. Coming into this week, the sophomore is second in the WAC in rebounding with an 9.7 average and ninth in scoring at 13.3 per game.
Continuing the Legacy
With the emergence of Omelogo Udeze since WAC play began, the sophomore has thrown her hat in the ring for WAC postseason honors. With her 9.7 rebounding average, she finds herself second-best in the WAC as this week begins. Should she finish with that average, it would be the fourth-best mark in school history. Udeze is also on pace to record 280 rebounds this year, which would give her the third-highest total in FS history. In addition, should Udeze claim the conference rebounding crown, she would become the fifth consecutive Bulldog to do so. Following is where Udeze rests on the single-season rebounding list and the last four Bulldogs to win the conference rebounding title:

Despite being in the crosshairs of opposing defenses the entire season, WAC player of the year candidate Lindsay Logan continues to post eye-popping numbers. She has been atop the WAC statistical sheet in many different categories all season, casting aside any thoughts of a sophomore jinx after making the WAC All-Newcomer team a year ago. She has been one of the WAC's best scorers, averaging 16.8 per game, fifth-best in the conference. Logan has also rested atop the conference in assists (5.80 per game) and three-pointers made (3.00 per game) the entire year. In addition, she has done it all while logging 36.6 minutes per game, second-most in the WAC. Logan has also been unquestionably the most consistent performer in the conference, scoring in double figures in 24 of FS's 25 games, failing to do so Feb. 9 at Hawai'i for the only time this season. At her current rate, the name "Lindsay Logan" will appear in several categories in the FS single-season record book. Following are the categories in which Logan is on pace to appear by the end of the season:
Current Projected Projected Single-Category Total Pace Season RankThree-Point FGs 75 87 First*Three-Point FG Attempts 237 270 First*Points 421 488 ThirdAssists 145 168 ThirdField Goals 151 175 Eighth* Logan has already eclipsed the single-season record in this categoryHeave-Ho
In her freshman season, Lindsay Logan proved she was capable of hitting the three-pointer. In fact, Logan was so good she attempted 179, which at the time tied the FS record for threes attempted in a single season. However, this year Logan has taken her three-point shooting to another stratosphere. Through 25 games, the sophomore has attempted 237, already eclipsing the record she tied last year. Should her pace continue, Logan will attempt 275 threes by the end of the regular season, 96 more than the program record. She is currently draining 3.00 three-pointers per game, tops in the WAC and among the best in the nation. Logan has made at least one three-pointer in all 25 games this season and in 48 of 54 games in her career.
Heave-Ho, Part 2
Lindsay Logan isn't just attempting three-pointers - she's making them. A lot of them. The sophomore has made 75 on the season, tops for a single-season in program history. She is on pace to make 87 this year, which would obliterate the previous record of 68 set by Connie Krueger in 1997-98 and rank fifth-best in the history of the WAC. Logan is also moving up the career three-point field goals list. Coming into this week, she has made 129 in her career, third in FS history, despite having played only 54 games. No other player in the top five played less than 107.
Does She Ever Get Tired?
There are many impressive factors about Lindsay Logan's gaudy numbers. But perhaps most amazing about her assault on the FS record book is she has put up these statistics while playing nearly every minute of every game. She is second in the WAC in minutes per game with a 36.6 average. Beginning Jan. 20 against Nevada through the SJSU game Feb. 4, Logan played in 169 consecutive minutes. The sophomore has logged a full 40 minutes in four of the last eight games, including Sunday's game against TCU.
Triple Shock All-Tournament Power
The non-conference tournaments brought out the best in Lindsay Logan this year. She was named to the all-tournament teams of all three tournaments in which Fresno State played this year. In addition, Logan was named most valuable player of the Fresno State Classic.
In for the Long Haul
Lindsay Logan has ranked second in the WAC in minutes per game for most of the season, trailing only Tulsa's Athena Pirpich, who is clocking 36.9 per game, just ahead of Logan's 36.6. Although Pirpich played a full 40 minutes to Logan's 37, it was Logan who scored a game-high 25 points in leading FS to a 72-58 victory.
Getting Defensive
When TCU scored 74 points against Fresno State on Sunday, the Horned Frogs became just the second WAC team to eclipse 70 points against Fresno State this year. The Bulldogs are allowing 65.2 points per game in the 13 conference contests, the fourth-best mark in the WAC. Only TCU has held opponents to 70 points or more on fewer occasions. The Frogs have only allowed one opponent to eclipse 70.
Record Setting Crowd
Fresno State's victory over Nevada on Jan. 20 featured a paid attendance of 1,411, the highest number ever for a women's basketball game played in the North Gym. The total eclipsed the previous record of 1,370, established Feb. 24, 1990, in a 73-65 FS victory over UNLV.
Night Moves
Fresno State's victory over Tulsa on Friday was only its second of the season in a night game. The Bulldogs are only 2-9 in night games but have a solid 7-7 record during the day. Sunday's game at Nevada is a 2 p.m. start.
Scintillating Simon
Tiffany Simon posted two more solid performances last week, scoring 20 points and tying her career high with nine rebounds in leading FS to victory over Tulsa. Two days later, she tallied 15 points against TCU, the 20th time in 25 games she has scored in double figures. Simon is third on the team and 11th in the WAC with a 12.7 scoring average. The Detroit native has been especially prolific in the last five games, in which she is averaging 15.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game and is 13-of-16 from the free throw line. In those five games, she is also averaging 37.6 minutes per game. Simon has received a starting nod in 41 of Fresno State's 42 games dating back to last year.
Relying on Logan
Need proof of Lindsay Logan's importance to the Bulldogs? Try this: Eight of Fresno State's nine victories have come when she scores 15 points or more. Conversely, FS is only 1-8 when she is held below 15 points.
Paukert Chips In
Laura Paukert has strung together six consecutive solid games and has become a solid contributor to the Fresno State offense. In the last six contests, the team's lone senior is averaging 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds, including an impressive 14-point, five rebound, four-assist performance Sunday against TCU. Paukert has scored eight or more points in each of those six games.
65 - That's the Magic Number
A look at the past two years shows just what these notes have indicated the entire season - 65 is the magic number for Fresno State. Including last year, the Bulldogs are 16-8 when scoring more than 65 points and 4-27 when they do not. This year alone, Fresno State is 8-2 when racking up more than 65 but only 1-14 when failing to hit the magic number. Its only victory when scoring less than 65 came Jan. 20 against Nevada, a 60-51 win.
100 ... And Counting
The last time Fresno State played Nevada, it turned out to be much more than just the team's sixth victory of the season. The triumph marked the 100th career win for head coach Britt King. The third-year FS head coach is now 103-128 all-time and is only the second Fresno State head coach to pick up their 100th career victory while still at the school. Bob Spencer, head coach of the Bulldogs from 1981-93, won a program-record 198 games in his 12 years.
It's Raining Threes
Fresno State made 11 three-pointers last week, meaning the Bulldogs have now made at least one three-pointer in 54 consecutive games. The last time FS did not make a three in a game was March 1, 1998, a 78-48 loss to the Owls in the WAC tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. In addition, guard Lindsay Logan has made at least one three in each game this season.
Who's Got the Windex?
The rebounding battle has been a major factor in determining the outcome of Fresno State's games this year. The Bulldogs are 6-2 this season when outrebounding their opponent and 3-13 when they do not. Fresno State has lost the rebounding battle in four of the last six games and has gone 2-4 in those contests. Last week, form held true as the Bulldogs outrebounded Tulsa and won but was outrebounded against TCU and lost.
Bulldogs Ink Six in Early Signing Period
Fresno State signed six players to national letters of intent in the early signing period. Cophie Moore (Arlington, Texas), a 5-foot 10-inch guard/forward, Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C.), a 5-foot 10-inch two-guard, Arrita Lane (Alea, Hawaii), a 6-foot forward, Lisa Copeland (Orchard Lake, Mich.), a 5-foot 10-inch power forward, Veronica Mack (Phoenix, Ariz.), a 5-foot 6-inch guard, and Barbara Johnson (Bakersfield, Calif.), a 6-foot 2-inch forward, all signed to play for the Bulldogs beginning in the 2001-02 season. "We are very excited about the talent the four players bring to the Bulldogs," head coach Britt King said. "Each player is capable of coming in and making an immediate impact. They are also very athletic and will allow us to play an up-temp style of basketball."
Noting Last Week's Action
- Lindsay Logan scored in double figures against both Tulsa and TCU last week and has done so in 24 of Fresno State's 25 games. She leads the WAC in double-digit scoring games.
- Sunday's 74-67 loss to TCU was only the second time this year the Bulldogs have scored more than 65 points and failed to win.
- Fresno State had four players score in double figures in both games, the first time this year they have had that many players score 10 or more points in consecutive contests.
- The Bulldogs made nine three-pointers against TCU, tying their season high.
- Chantea Fleming returned to the Bulldog lineup on Friday, pushing the number of available players to eight. Fleming had missed the last 14 games with a stress fracture in her left shin. FS was 5-9 in her absence.
- Fresno State was outrebounded against the Horned Frogs but outrebounded Tulsa. The Bulldogs are now 6-3 when outrebounding its opponent and 3-13 when they do not.
- Omelogo Udeze had a double-double in both games and now has nine double-doubles in the 13 conference games.
- Fresno State is 9-0 when outscoring its opponents and 0-16 when it does not.
- When TCU defeated Fresno State on Sunday, it marked the first time in the eight meetings between the two schools the home team lost.
- Lindsay Logan's double-double against TCU was her second of the season.
- Tulsa head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller was whistled for a technical foul in the second half for arguing, the fourth time this year FS's opponent has been whistled for a technical foul. The Bulldogs are 3-1 when the opposing team is hit with a "T."
