FRESNO, Calif. - Junior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti (Tustin, Calif.) was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after finishing as one of the top hitters last weekend in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
The all-West Region and two-time first team all-WAC selection picked up her first WAC Player of the Week honors this morning after batting .385 (5-13) with two runs, two home runs, six RBI, four walks (two intentional), 11 total bases and a .846 slugging percentage.
Going into Sunday's games, Fossatti was leading all full-time starters in the tournament with a .556 average (5-9, 2 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 walks, 11 TB, 1.222 slugging percentage).
In the tournament opener against Missouri, Fossatti went 2-2 with a RBI and a walk. After going 0-3 against #18 Michigan in the night cap on the first day of tournament action, she bounced back the next day. Fossatti connected for a pair of two-run home runs in Fresno State's 7-2 win over Georgia and finished the game with a 3-4, two runs and five RBI performance. It was Fossatti's first career multiple home run game and that moved her into the school's top 10 in home runs with eight. That evening, Fossatti was 0-0 after being walked three times, two intentionally, by #16 Oregon State. In the final game for the Bulldogs in tournament play against Missouri held Fossatti hitless (0-4).
The Bulldogs finished with a 3-2 mark in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Fresno State was supposed to play #15 Nebraska in the consolation championship game but rained washed out all late afternoon contests which brought the tournament to a close.
Fresno State, however, was declared the consolation champion in the Silver Championship bracket.
With the win over Missouri on Sunday, 16th-year head coach Margie Wright collected her 800th win at Fresno State. The NCAA all-time winningest coach also pushed her career total to 949- 306-3 in 22 years.
Fresno State is idle this upcoming week but the following week Fresno State begins a 10-game home stand to open the month of March. The Bulldogs will be back in action on March 7 when they make their first appearance at home hosting Colorado State (6:00 pm) in a non-conference doubleheader. The next day, the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic, March 8-11, will take place at Bulldog Diamond. The four-day, seven-team tournament field will feature Cal Poly, Colorado State, DePaul, Fresno State, New Mexico State, Oregon State and UCLA. After the tournament the Bulldogs host Southern Utah on March 13 (6:00 pm).
Tickets for all the home games and tournament passes for the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic can be purchased at either the Bulldog Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS, on-line or on game day.
