FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State hurler Francisco Nieves (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) got his first career start as a Bulldog Saturday at Pete Beiden Field. Nieves pitched a complete game to give the Bulldogs a 6-3 victory over the Cougars.
Designated hitter Casey McGehee (Fr., Aptos, Calif.) hit a triple in the first inning to get things started for the Bulldogs. McGehee scored on a throwing error by the Cougars shortstop Brad Hales trying to throw out Nick Garcia (Sr., Lakewood, Calif.) at first. In the second, catcher Brad Harper (Jr., Madera, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly into centerfield to score right fielder Simon Tafoya (Sr., Pittsburg, Calif.) giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the end of the second inning. This was the first lead in a game for the Bulldogs this series.
Nieves held the Cougars scoreless through the first four innings. In the fifth, Shane Belliston hit a single to score Ty Haguewood from second cutting the Fresno State lead to one run. The Bulldogs answered in the fifth with three runs of their own. McGehee scored Tom Creighton (Jr., Weldon, Calif.) who reached base on a leadoff single. The Bulldogs scored their final run of the game in the eighth inning when Harper hit a single to score Tafoya from third. The Cougars scored two runs in the ninth, but it was not enough to stop the Bulldogs from getting their second win of the season.
