Baseball Takes Out Saint Mary's 5-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Ben Fritz and Beau Hintz combined to allow Saint Mary's one run while the Bulldog offense pounded out nine hits as Fresno State defeated the Gaels 5-1 before 2,465 at Beiden Field. The win improves the Bulldogs to 3-4 while SMC drops to 3-3.
FS got on the board first, scoring one in the third inning. Brad Harper led off with a double into right center. Tom Creighton hit a sacrifice bunt advancing Harper to third. Casey McGehee then doubled down the left field line, scoring Harper from third, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Saint Mary's tied the score 1-1 in the top of the fifth. With one out, Brian Houle tripled. The next batter, Mike Reardon, singled in Houle to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs took the lead for good. Simon Tafoya walked to lead off the inning. One out later, Tobey Riday-White singled to right, sending Tafoya to third. Harper hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Tafoya, and giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Fresno State broke through with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two on and one out, Josh Labandeira hit his first home run of the season over the right center field wall, giving the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.
Beau Hintz worked four shutout innings to even his record at 1-1. Mike Byer picked up the loss for the Gaels and is now 0-1.
Next up for Fresno State is a three-game series vs. Santa Clara. Game one is Friday at 7 p.m. at Beiden Field.
