Baseball Defeats Miami University 3-2 in Extra Innings

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.) drilled a single down the right field line to score Oscar Lopez (Sr., San Diego, Calif.), giving Fresno State a 3-2 win over Miami University of Ohio in 10 innings. Nick Moran (Elk Grove, Calif.) got the start for the Bulldogs and pitched a solid 7 2/3 while striking out five and allowing only one earned run before turning the ball over. Sophomore Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) finished the RedHawks off by striking out four in 2 1/3 innings of work and improving his record to 2-2. The RedHawks Chris Leonard pitched a complete game 9 1/3 innings, striking out five Bulldogs, but allowed Fresno State to score the winning run in the bottom of the tenth dropping his record to 2-1.
Miami University of Ohio got out to an early lead over the Bulldogs again this afternoon at Pete Beiden Field, before a 2001 season home game attendance record 3,017, but the Bulldogs battled back to even the game at one run a piece after one.
In the top of the first, with one out and runners on first and third Jeremy Ison flied out to left field to score the runner on third giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Fresno State responded in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to tie the game at one. With two outs Josh Labandeira (Sr., Porterville, Calif.) singled to get things started for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the first. Two batters later McGehee singled to score Labandeira from second tying the game at one at the end of one.
Miami University of Ohio answered back with a run of their own in the top of the second to bring their lead back to one run over the Bulldogs. The RedHawks had two outs and runners on second and third when Moran threw wild pitch that got away from Brad Harper (Madera, Calif.) to score the runner from third giving Miami University of a Ohio a 2-1 lead at the end of two. Fresno State tied it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Josh Labandeira hit his fourth home run of the season. The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when McGehee singled down the right field line to score Lopez giving Fresno State a 3-2 victory over the RedHawks.
Fresno State improves its record to 15-8, while Miami of Ohio falls to 4-5 on the season. The Bulldogs and the RedHawks will be back in action Monday for the opening day of competition in the 23rd Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
