FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs hosted the final English show for Region I competition on Sunday, Mar. 11 at the Student Horse Center. Fresno State won the morning show and took second in the afternoon.
Fresno State took the lead in the Region I standings early in the season and has stayed in that spot for more than two months, untouched. The win Sunday solidified that spot. The English team will finish with a total of 277 points with U.C. Davis following in second with 231. Cal Poly takes the number three spot with Stanford in fourth at 174.
The Bulldogs dominated in the morning finishing with 27 points over nearest leader Bakersfield with 18. Fresno State started the day with senior Erin Tooms and junior Stacy Steinhoff finished second and third respectively in the Open Equitation Over Fences. Junior Dawn Crawford followed up with a third place in the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences. Then stepped in senior Kalli Bowles to take a first place in the Novice Equitation Over Fences.
Fresno State then obliterated the Intermediate Equitation taking the first, second, third and seventh places in riders freshman Dawn McIntosh, junior Abby Michael, Bowles and senior Kim Dellar respectively. Freshman Sarah Holmes took fourth in the Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter followed by sophomore Emilie Wentworth taking third in the Walk/Trot.
The Bulldogs finished off the morning with the Novice Equitation and Open Equitation. In Novice, freshman Amanda Hancock placed first in section A and freshman Andrea Hanson took first with junior Dana VanDerGiessen taking second in section B. Junior Sarah Woodward grabbed second, Crawford third and Steinhoff sixth in section A of the Open Equtation. In section B, Tooms took first and Tonello took second.
The afternoon would be much of the same for the Bulldogs. They tallied thirteen top-three finishes in the nine events. Championship rides were claimed by Bowles, Woodward, junior Monica DeBie, Reed, Hancock and junior Katey Feeley. The `Dogs took second in the afternoon show with 24 points following Cal Poly with 27.
The `Dogs also qualified five more riders individually for the Regional Finals. With winning the region as a team they get an automatic entrance into the Zone 8 Finals at BYU, but individuals can still compete. Woodward, Crawford, freshman Michelle Tonello, Tooms, Bowles and Hancock all qualified on Sunday. The Regionals will be hosted at Fresno State on March 24-25, beginning at 9 a.m.
