Dowland Captures WAC Softball Player of the Week Honors

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior shortstop Alicia Dowland (La Palma, Calif.) picked up her second career Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office this afternoon.
One of two seniors on the squad, Dowland led all Bulldog players last week with a .400 average. At the Kia Klassic, she led the `Dogs with a .455 average after going 5-11 with two runs, three walks, two hit by pitch, sacrifice and five total bases for a .455 slugging percentage as the No. 6 batter in the line up.
Dowland had two multiple hit games at the Kia Klassic. In the 2-0 win against North Carolina, Dowland went 1-2 with a run scored. In the loss to Utah State, she was the only Bulldog with two hits as she went 2-3 at the plate. In the loss to No. 5 Oklahoma, Dowland went 0-1 with a run and was hit by pitch while laying down a sacrifice bunt. In the tournament opener against No. 14 Notre Dame, Dowland went 2-2 with a walk.
The 1999 second team all-WAC selection has hit safely in four of her last six games and is batting .429 (6-14) wit two runs, RBI, three walks, two hit by pitch and a sacrifice. She is batting .333 (13-39) with five runs, four RBI, four walks and a hit by pitch in her last 15 games.
With five multiple hit games on the season, Dowland does have one multiple RBI game and is batting .288 (19-66) on the year with 10 runs, two doubles, five RBI, five walks and five sacrifices.
Fresno State hosts Dartmouth this evening in a 6:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader before entertaining Texas A&M Corpus Christi tomorrow night in another 6:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader. The Bulldogs then travel to No. 25 Pacific on Thursday for a 1:00 p.m. showdown before beginning WAC play this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Loyola Marymount.
