Nevada Defeats Baseball 6-2

FRESNO, Calif. - -- Nevada freshmen pitchers Mateo Miramontes and James Holcomb combined to hold Fresno State to just two runs as the Wolf Pack won game three of the series, Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park, 6-2. Miramontes went 7 1/3 innings throwing 122 pitches, allowing one run on eight hits striking out six. With the win he improved to 3-1 on the season. Holcomb pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing two hits and one run.
Nevada scored in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Matt Maguire, who reached on a fielders choice, scored from second base when FS left fielder Simon Tafoya dropped a fly ball. The Wolf Pack added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and two Bulldog errors. Second baseman Joey Herrera walked to start the inning and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by FS starting pitcher Beau Hintz. Left fielder Chris Nickerson's RBI single scored Herrera. Maguire followed with a single that moved Nickerson to third base. Right fielder Bo Bryant grounded into a double play but Nickerson scored the second run on the inning and gave Nevada a 3-0 lead.
FS scored in the top of the fourth inning when shortstop Josh Labandeira singled and stole second base. Catcher Brad Harper walked placing Bulldog runners on first and second base. Tafoya's fly out to center field moved Labandeira to third base where he scored on right fielder Tobey Riday-White's single. Center fielder Tony Guzman grounded into a double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning third baseman Mike Gillies doubled with one out and advanced to third base when center fielder Clay Belding followed with a single to left field. Gillies was held at third base by Nevada head coach Gary Powers but was sent home when the FS outfielder let the ball get under his glove and the Wolf Pack again led by three, 4-1. Nevada added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits and one error by the Bulldogs. Catcher Tony Cappuccilli singed home JaRell McIntyre who reached on fielders choice and Bo Bryant who was hit by pitch scored one batter later when designated hitter Alex Rangel singled up the middle.
FS scored one run in the top of the ninth inning on two hits. Second baseman Tom Creighton singled with one out and advanced to second base when Bulldog third baseman Oscar Lopez's ground ball bounced off the Gillies at third base to Maguire at shortstop who threw to first for the out. First baseman Brandon Gemoll was hit by pitch putting runners on first and second with two out. Designated hitter Casey McGehee singled driving home Creighton. Labandeira popped up to second base to end the game.
With the victory Nevada won the series winning the final two games on Saturday and Sunday. The Wolf Pack improved to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in the WAC. FS fell to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the WAC. Next action for Nevada is Tuesday when they travel to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the California Bears at 2:00 p.m.
