Baseball Bounced by Cal Poly 9-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Phil Thompson went 4-for-4, including a three-run home run to bust the game open in the eighth inning, as Cal Poly defeated Fresno State 9-4. The loss drops the Bulldogs' record to 28-17 while the Mustangs improve to 24-14.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kevin Tillman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bryan Gant. The Mustangs added to their lead in the bottom of the second when Gant hit a triple, scoring Andrew Toussaint and Phil Thompson.
After shutting out the Mustangs in the third inning, Ben Fritz gave up a leadoff home run by Keith Anderson to give Cal Poly a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs tacked on one more run in the in the bottom of the fourth when Gant doubled to score Thompson.
Fresno State got on the board in the top of the sixth, when Brandon Gemoll picked up a bases loaded single, scoring Dan Young and Oscar Lopez. Gemoll's base hit cut Cal Poly's lead to 5-2.
But the Mustangs broke the game open in the eighth, scoring four runs to increase the advantage to 9-2. A Toussaint RBI single preceded Thompson's second home run of the year, a three-run shot that capped the Mustangs scoring.
Fresno State rounded out its scoring when Jeff Prieto hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth.
Greg Bochy pitched five innings, allowing two runs, to pick up the win. He is now 4-1. Ben Fritz was hung with the loss and is 2-5.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on TCU at Beiden Field.
