No. 10 Women's Tennis Defeats Hawaii 4-0

FRESNO, Calif. -- No. 10 Fresno State women's tennis won their seventh straight match Friday afternoon, recording a 4-0 shutout of Hawaii in the first round of the 2001 WAC Championship Tennis Tournament at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (19-3), the tournament's No. 1 seed, won doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 3 to claim a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles team of Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer, ranked No. 6 nationally, posted an 8-2 win over Hawaii's Nina Wegner and Stacy Hakikawa to improve to 22-3 overall on the season. No. 3 doubles Kelly Ramirez and Chantel Wiggins added another 8-2 victory, their fourth consecutive win.
Fresno State collected singles victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 spots. Niggemeyer, ranked No. 30 nationally, defeated Wegner 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to improve to 23-8 on the season. Senior Liesl Fichtbauer, ranked No. 44 nationally, recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Simone Jardim notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Fresno State will now face SMU, the tournament's No. 4 seed, Saturday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.
