SAN JOSE, Calif. - No. 13 Fresno State softball picked up its fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference victory with a 2-0 shutout win on the road over San Jose State.
The Bulldogs, who scored two runs on five hits and had two errors, picked up both runs in the top of the fourth. San Jose State was held to one hit and committed one error.
In the fourth, first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki led off with a single to center field. Left fielder Tiffany Whipple reached base safely on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an errant throw by SJSU pitcher Sabrina Quintero. With the ball rolling all the way to the outfield fence, Czarnecki scored the first run for the Bulldogs. With no outs, designated player Lori Hoffman doubled to left field to score Whipple. Shortstop Alicia Dowland followed with a single to center field to put runners on the corners. However, Quintero got the next two Bulldog batters to fly out.
Dowland was the lone Bulldog to collect two or more hits after going 2-3.
Right-hander Leslie Poole picked up her 14th win and 10th shutout victory while improving to 2-0 in WAC (two shutouts). Giving up just one hit which came in the first, it was Poole's second one-hitter on the season after setting down 20 of the last 21 batters (one Spartan reached on a Bulldog error). In addition, Poole has not given up a run or earned run in the last 30.0 innings in her last five games.
