Hawai'i Defeats Baseball 5-4 in 10 Innings

HONOLULU - The Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to Hawai'i this afternoon 5-4 in 10 innings. Nick Moran received the loss to drop his record to 2-4 while the Bulldogs overall record falls to 24-16 and 8-9 in the WAC.
In the top of the second, Casey McGehee led off with a double that bounced off the right center field wall to get things rolling for Fresno State. McGehee then advanced to third on a balk by the Hawai'i pitcher Wakon Childers. The following batter Brad Harper hit into a 6-3 to score McGehee to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Rainbows responded in the bottom of the second to score three runs to strip Fresno State of their lead. After the lead off batter flied out to left Ben Fritz walked the next two batters. The following batter Kevin Gilbride singled to load the bases for the Rainbows. Fritz then walked the next batter to score the Rainbows first run. Courtland Wilson followed with a single to score two runs for Hawai'i giving them a 3-1 lead at the end of two innings. Fresno State evened the score in the top of the third when they scored two runs on an error by the Rainbows short stop Cortland Wilson. The first two batters in the inning Oscar Lopez and Josh Labandeira singled and three batters later with two outs Harper hit the ball to the Rainbows short stop Wilson who could not complete the throw to first scoring Lopez and Labandeira to tie the game at 3-3.
The Rainbows added one run in the sixth when Patrick Scalabrini singled to score Wilson to give Hawai'i a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs tied the game at 4-4 thanks to a wild pitch by Wakon Childers the starting pitcher for the Rainbows. McGehee led off the inning with a single to left and two batters later Ben Fritz singled to advance McGehee to third. McGehee scored on a wild pitch by Childers that hit the dirt and rolled to the backstop.
Neither team could score in the final inning of the game and took it into extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, Hawai'i loaded the bases and then scored on a single by Danny Kimura to give the Rainbows a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and the Rainbows will be back in action Monday at 9:30 p.m. PDT.
