FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State struggled amidst 40 mph wind gusts to finish tied for sixth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships hosted at the Forest Ridge Golf Course in Broken Arrow, Okla. Wednesday.
The TCU Horned Frogs captured the team title with their score of 896. Tulsa had overtaken TCU after round two, but the Horned Frogs battled back to defeat Tulsa by one stroke. The Bulldogs scored 317 for a 924 total, tieing Hawai'i and falling to other District 7 seven teams Nevada (5th) and UTEP (4th).
Individually, Tulsa had the top individual in David Inglis who ended with an even 216. In second was TCU's Scott Volpitto who scored a 71 to finish with 218 (+2). Junior Jonathon Echols was the lead scorer for the Bulldogs at T5. Echols shot a 76 in today's final round to finish 224 (+8).
Falling from his two-day position of lead `Dog was sophomore Nick Watney who shot 77 Wednesday to give him a 9-over 225 and a tie for seventh. Junior Dustin Smith dropped to T41 after a disappointing 89 for 242. Senior Wes Lovell scored 43rd with 243 and sophomore Daniel Timmons placed 44th with 243.
"It was a tough day and tournament for the `Dogs," head coach Mike Watney said. "This was a very tough course where if you missed the green you didn't have just a tough chip shot but instead you faced incredible winds and thick forests. We had a lot riding on our performance in this tournament and we struggled terribly."
The Bulldogs will now face their post-season fate. On Tuesday, May 8 the NCAA Men's Golf Committee will announce the championship participants. Beginning at 9 a.m. the participants will be announced via conference call. The Bulldogs have defeated a number of their fellow District 7 opponents and will be waiting to discover their post-season existence. If they make the selection, they will be on their way to the regional that is being hosted in Corvallis, Ore. by Oregon State.
