Baseball Drops Heartbreaker to TCU 4-3

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Bulldogs got out to an early lead over TCU in the top of the sixth, when Oscar Lopez hit his fifth home run of the season score Scott Beshears giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Beshears entered the game to pinch hit for Dan Young and singled to reach base. Lopez's home run extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
In the bottom of the sixth, TCU responded by scoring one run of their own. Rudy Ontiveros led off the inning with a triple, and the following batter Erick Macha hit a high fly ball into right field to score Ontiveros trimming the Fresno State lead to 2-1.
Tony Guzman led off the top of the eighth with a double down the right field line to get the ball rolling for the Bulldogs. With one out Lopez singled to advance Guzman to third, and Josh Labandeira hit a sacrifice fly into center field to score Guzman handing the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The Horned Frogs answered once again, but this time it was fatal for Fresno State. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, a Nick Moran pitch to advance to first base hit Terry Trofholz. The following batter Ontiveros singled to right center advancing Trofholz to third. With runners on first and third and one our Macha singled to score Trofholz trimming the Fresno State lead to one run. Jason Gutknecht entered the game in relief of Nick Moran who had pitched a solid game with runners on first and second. The first batter Gutknecht faced was Tom Bates and he stroked a double to left center to score Ontiveros and Macha handing the Horned Frogs a 4-3 victory.
The Bulldogs overall record drops to 33-20 and 16-12 in the WAC, while TCU improves it record to 31-21 overall, and 21-10 in the WAC. Nick Moran was credited with the loss after pitching 7.1 innings and giving up only six hits dropping his record to 4-5. The Horned Frogs Chris Bradshaw pitched 8.0 innings giving up seven hits with 4 strikeouts and improving his record to 7-4. Stan Newton pitched the top of the ninth for TCU and registered his sixth save of the season.
