Fresno State was selected as a regional site and will host the first two rounds of the women's NCAA Tournament May 12-13. The winner from the four-team regional will advance to the Sweet 16 at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Ga. on May 17-20. There were 31 conferences that received automatic qualification into the 64-team field, with the other schools garnering at-large bids.
Saturday, May 1210 a.m.: (17-32) UCLA vs. (33-48) Georgia Tech2 p.m.: (11) Fresno State vs. (49-64) Cal State NorthridgeScouting Cal State Northridge (22-8): Cal State Northridge (22-8, 3-0 BSC) won its first ever Big Sky Conference title and earned its first NCAA berth in five seasons. The Matadors, tabbed as the region's No. 49-64 seed, knocked off top seeded Weber State 4-1 on Apr. 22 in the conference championship. Cal State Northridge, playing in their final season in the Big Sky Conference, dropped only one singles contest and two doubles contests. Overall, they were 10-1 at singles and 4-2 at doubles. Sophomore Tereza Simonyan is Cal State Northridge's top player, with a 24-7 overall singles record and the highest winning percentage (.774) on the squad. She teamed with Gabriella Reiner during the conference tournament at No. 2 doubles, posting a 2-0 record. Fresno State is 4-0 overall against Cal State Northridge, including an 8-1 victory in 1993- the last meeting between the two schools.
Sunday, May 131 p.m.: Winner 10 a.m. match vs. Winner 2 p.m. match
Fresno State vs. UCLA (7-17): The Bulldogs are 1-2 overall against the Bruins, with the lone win coming this season in a 5-2 road victory on Feb. 23.
Fresno State vs. Georgia Tech (11-10): The Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets have never played a women's tennis match.
BULLDOGS ARE WELL-REPRESENTED IN NCAA INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT
Junior Kim Niggemeyer (24-8 overall, 17-4 dual) and senior Liesl Fichtbauer (31-6 overall, 20-4 dual) were selected to the 64-player field for the NCAA Singles Tournament beginning May 22. Niggemeyer and Fichtbauer are ranked Nos. 23 and 41 in the nation, respectively. The doubles team of Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim (23-3 overall, 18-2 dual) is ranked No. 6 nationally and earned a berth in the NCAA Doubles Championship.
SEVERAL BULLDOGS RECEIVE WAC HONORS
Liesl Fichtbauer was named the 2001 WAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year last weekend at the conclusion of the WAC Tournament. The senior is currently ranked No. 41 nationally and had won 18 matches in a row before falling to TCU's Patricia Aburto 7-5, 7-6 (4) in Fresno State' s 4-2 loss on Apr. 29. Fichtbauer and Kim Niggemeyer were named to the first team for singles. Junior Simone Jardim was a second-team singles selection. The doubles team of Niggemeyer and Jardim was named to the first team for doubles.
