FRESNO, Calif. -
Former Bulldog Jared Fernandez made his pitching debut today for the Cincinnati Reds. Fernandez
played for Fresno State in 1993 and 1994. Against the Philadelphia Phillies, he went 4.2 innings,
allowing three earnes runs. He got the loss as the Reds lost, 8-1.
This marks the 35th time that a former Fresno State player has played in the Major League. Earlier
this year Angels' infielder and former Bulldog Larry Barnes also made his debut.
"I'm really proud of Jared...he's spent nine years in the minors," said Bennett, "he's really
put in the time and done it for himself. It couldn't have happened to a better guy."
Fernandez compiled an overall record of 18-8 with 10 complete games and 141 strikeouts in his two years at Fresno State. He had
an ERA of 3.54 his junior year and a 3.98 ERA his senior year.
