FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's tennis teams combined to go 1-1 on day two of the World Team Tennis Championships in San Diego.
The Bulldogs opened the day by dropping a 23-20 decision in overtime to Oklahoma State. The top-ranked doubles team of Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer got things rolling for FS immediately by defeating Katya Kolodynska and Lindsay Faltynkova 6-3. But Oklahoma State countered by winning the next three matches by a combined score of 18-7, giving the Cowboys and Cowgirls a 21-13 lead heading into the final match -- mixed doubles. Nick Fustar teamed with Niggemeyer to win the set 6-1 but fell 1-1 in overtime, giving Oklahoma State the victory.
Later in the day, the Bulldogs rebounded to take out Arizona 25-17. Once again, Jardim and Niggemeyer put Fresno State in front immediately with a 6-4 win at women's doubles. After U of A won the men's singles, Fustar teamed with Alex Krohn for a 6-1 win in men's doubles. Jardim cruised past Mary Pierre Pouliot 6-1 in women's singles before Fustar and Niggemeyer ended it with a 6-2 win in mixed doubles.
Fresno State will play for fifth place in the tournament tomorrow. The Bulldogs take on Oklahoma City at 9 a.m.
The teams are using the WTT format at these national championships. The team tennis concept, originated by Billie Jean King and Larry King, features teams comprised of at least two men, two women and a coach. Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. The WTT format features fan-friendly rules such as cumulative scoring, substitution, overtime and supertiebreakers.
