FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Katherin Winterhalter won both of her matches Saturday and has advanced to the semifinals of the Saint Mary's Invitational, going on this weekend in Moraga, Calif.
The Clovis, Calif., native won her round of 16 match over Valerie Verrier of Saint Mary's 6-3, 6-3. She had to work a little harder in the quarterfinals, but Winterhalter prevailed nonetheless. She defeated Biljana Trpeska of Nevada 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Winterhalter will compete in the semifinals Sunday morning. The finals follow the semifinal matches.
While Winterhalter's results were good news, Courtney Jantz unfortunately could not duplicate her teammate's efforts. Jantz lost in the round of 16 to Edit Pakay of Loyola Marymount 6-2, 6-4 and was eliminated.
In doubles, Winterhalter and Jantz opened the day with an 8-4 victory over Italina Kirkness and Amanda Sanches of Sacramento State. But the duo's tournament came to a close in the quarterfinals in the form of a 9-7 loss to Carla Arquelles and Nicole Havlicek of California.
Winterhalter and Jantz are the only Bulldogs playing in the Saint Mary's Invitational.
